The exhibition features original illustrations from three book projects; Mary Casanova’s Wake Up Island (University of Minnesota Press) and Hush, Hush, Forest (University of Minnesota Press) as illustrated by printmaker Nick Wroblewski, and World of Wonder: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments (Milkweed Editions) written by Aimee Nezhukumatathil and illustrated by Fumi Nakamura. Selections from all three books will be accompanied by wood carvings from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum’s collection of Leo and Mariylyn Smith folk art - a collection of sculptures informed by the whimsy and wonder of the Mississippi River marine environments - interspersed throughout the gallery.

‘Look Toward the Future, but Not So Far as to Miss Today’ - solo exhibition at ThiNkspace (Los angeles, Ca) by Fumi Nakamura

Screen Shot 2021-03-14 at 00.05.29.png

I am terrible at updating news here… Sorry (‘;ω;`)

The solo exhibition ‘“Look Toward the Future, but Not So Far as to Miss Today‘ is currently exhibited at Thinkspace in Los Angeles, California. On view until March 27th. Please stop by if you are in LA.

“Thinkspace Projects is pleased to present this new solo exhibition from artist Fumi Nakamura. ‘Look Towards the Future, But Not So Far As To Miss Today’ is a new body of work depicting flora and fauna. Each element is carefully selected to represent elements of life, memory, body and soul. Nakamura pulls from the subconscious, using metaphor and imagery to create striking pieces.

Fumi Nakamura draws inspiration from the Japanese phrase meaning “language of flower.” In line with this concept, each flower has different meanings right down to the positioning. Colors play a huge role as well, and each work becomes full of phrases and meanings. One tulip can mean a variety of things from “compassion” to “confession of love” to the “lost love” of a white tulip.

Different from her previous work in which she frequently incorporated negative space, this new series is filled up to the edges. Using custom “coffin” or “container” imagery, Nakamura takes inspiration from the funeral ceremony where we last see and connect with another being physically and reflect on the past together. This collection of works is layered and complex both in visuals and meaning.“

SEEING RED : THINKSPACE x BOOOOOOOM by Fumi Nakamura

0.jpg

Sorry, late update here. Many friends who follow my instagram may know I have a piece in this amazing exhibition. Here are some details about the show :

“For more than a decade Booooooom has championed visual artists from all over the world, presenting a unique mix of high and low brow work from both emerging and established artists. Curated by Jeff Hamada, “Seeing Red” presents all new works from a wide array of artists who’ve been featured on Booooooom over the past ten years, and with the spirit of the site in mind, there are legendary names and relatively unknown ones showing alongside each other. Each artist was given the same challenge, to work within a 12×12 inch (30×30 cm) frame and to incorporate the color red into their work. The simple visual theme serves as a common thread connecting all the works—a pathway for the viewer to travel into and out of each piece—and provides a reference point to help understand the way this diverse group sees the world around them.”

Here is a link to all the available pieces. :)

To view my piece, go to W O R K S, and select 2019 --- untitled.

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening (I wish I made it). More exhibition are scheduled this year. Will make sure to share here and on instagram. Please follow, if you are interested.
